From lush urban decks to remote Kiwi hideaways, here’s our dream list of backyard setups that practically beg for a game.
Planning a New Zealand getaway or dreaming up your perfect backyard setup? We’ve matched six stunning stays with the outdoor games we’d love to play there.
New Zealand’s got no shortage of stunning backyards and holiday spots—some small and clever, others wildly scenic. We can't help imagining how fun it would be to play in them.
Here are a few dream-worthy stays from around Aotearoa—plus the games we’d be packing if we were heading there for the weekend.
Erehwon Cabin – Okuku, Canterbury
Tucked into native bush with wide open paddocks and a pizza oven begging for a slow evening outside.
We’d play: Custom Cornhole Set
With a few throws between woodfired pizza slices and a local pinot in hand—it’s the perfect mix of laid-back and competitive.
Erehwon Cabin on Canopy Camping
Watercliff – The Nest – Omanawa, Bay of Plenty
Outdoor bath, hanging chairs, and the sound of the river below—it’s the ultimate off-grid chill zone.
We’d play: Giant Connect Four
We’re imagining reconnecting over a cheeseboard, glass of bubbles, and a cheeky game on the deck as the sun sets.
Tuateawa Coastal Retreat – Coromandel Peninsula
All sea views and serenity, with plenty of space to stretch out and unplug.
We’d play: Giant Tumbling Tower
Perfect on the deck looking out over the ocean —easy to play with one hand while your other holds a mulled wine.
The Oaks Safari Tent – Clevedon, Auckland
Set under a canopy of mature oak trees just 40 minutes from the city, this spot blends glamping with real space to roam.
We’d play: Kubb
Barefoot on the lawn with nothing but nature in the background. Strategic throws, laughter, and a little family rivalry? Yes please.
Dusk and Dawn – Waitākere Ranges, Auckland
Two dreamy glass domes high above the city with wraparound decks, swinging chairs, and sunset views for days.
We’d play: Backyard Chats – Icebreaker Edition
Low-pressure questions and honest laughs under the stars = connection in its purest form.
Driftaway Queenstown – Frankton, Queenstown
A modern holiday park with family-friendly cabins, design-forward style, and heaps of space to play.
We’d play: Skittles or Gutter Board
Perfect for kids, adults, and anyone in between. Set up on the lawn for some light-hearted competition after a big day exploring.
Just a heads-up:
These locations don’t stock our games (as far as we know)—but we think they’d be the perfect setting for a round (or three).
P.S. Know someone who owns a spot like this? We’re always on the lookout for dreamy places to feature or partner with. If you think our games would be a good fit, flick us a message or tag us @backyardgames.nz.
