If you grew up in a big family, you know that games weren't just something you played. They were how you spent time together. How you learned to compete without falling apart about it. How you figured out who was naturally strategic, who played with pure instinct, and who would absolutely bend the rules if they thought they could get away with it. (Every family has that person. In a big family, there are at least three of them.)
Backyard Games NZ was born from exactly that world. The nostalgia of long afternoons in the backyard with more siblings, cousins, and neighbours than any game was technically designed for. The chaos of too many people playing something with not quite enough equipment. The laughter that came from it anyway. The lessons that stuck long after the game was packed away.
What Games Taught Us
Growing up with a big family and a backyard full of games teaches you things that don't come with instruction manuals.
They teach you how to have fun without it needing to be perfect. How to play fair even when you really, really want to win. How to keep people honest, which in a big family is both a survival skill and an art form. How to include the younger kids without making it boring, and how to challenge the older ones without it turning into a thing.
Most of all, they teach you that the game itself isn't the point. The point is what happens around it. The conversations, the trash talk, the unlikely alliances, the moments where someone does something so impressive or so ridiculous that the whole group stops and just laughs together.
That feeling, that specific, irreplaceable feeling of being part of something genuinely joyful with people you love, is what Backyard Games NZ has always been about. We didn't start this business to sell games. We started it to give people more of that feeling.
The Connection That Games Create
There's something about a game that strips away the usual layers people carry around. The roles, the pressures, the distance that builds up between people when life gets busy. Put a group of people around a game and something shifts. They're just people again. Playing, laughing, competing, connecting.
We've seen it happen at backyard barbecues and wedding receptions. At corporate team days and community events. At family Christmases where people who hadn't properly talked in years ended up on the same team and remembered why they liked each other.
It happens every time. And it never stops being one of our favourite things about what we do.
That genuine joy and connection that comes from playing games together is the whole reason Backyard Games NZ exists. It's the thing we grew up with and couldn't let go of, and it's the thing we want to bring to every single person who buys one of our games.
Why Quality Has Always Mattered
When you grow up with games that matter, you develop a strong opinion about quality pretty quickly.
A cheap game that breaks during the best moment of the afternoon isn't just disappointing, it's a mood killer in a way that's hard to recover from. A game that's built well, that feels solid in your hands and holds up through years of enthusiastic use, is the one that becomes part of the family story.
That's why every game in the Backyard Games NZ range is chosen with the same standard in mind: premium materials, genuine durability, and the kind of quality that earns a permanent spot in your backyard rather than a shelf in the garage.
Our Cornhole sets are built from hardwood. Our Giant Kubb is made to take serious throwing. Everything in the range is chosen because it's worthy of the moments it'll be part of, not just the first few times, but year after year of gatherings, family occasions, and the kind of afternoons that nobody plans to be memorable but always are.
From One Family's Backyard to Yours
We're a small, proud Kiwi business based in Mount Maunganui, and we've never lost sight of where we came from. The big family gatherings. The games that ran until the light disappeared. The arguments about the rules that somehow made everything more fun rather than less.
What's changed is the scale. We now supply games to families, businesses, event planners, schools, community groups, and individuals across New Zealand and Australia. We offer custom branding for businesses who want their own story woven into a game. We ship to Australia because the belief that games bring people together doesn't stop at the Tasman.
What hasn't changed is the reason. Every game we sell is an invitation to gather, to play, to connect, and to make the kind of memories that still make you smile twenty years later.
That's what games gave us growing up. It's what we want to give you.
