Cornhole Rules Explained: A Simple Guide for Beginners

Cornhole Rules Explained: A Simple Guide for Beginners

What Is Cornhole?

If you're new here, Cornhole is a lawn game where players take turns throwing bean bags at a raised wooden board with a hole in it. The goal? Score points by landing your bag on the board or sinking it through the hole. Sounds simple, right? But just you wait—there’s room for strategy, cheeky plays, and a whole lot of laughs. It’s easy to learn, fun for all ages, and perfect for BBQs, beach days, backyard hangouts, or bigger group celebrations.

Whether you're new to the game or just need a refresher, this simple guide walks you through the basic cornhole rules, with a focus on the way most Kiwis play: backyard-style with one board.

Backyard Style Cornhole

Unlike tournament-style play (which uses two boards and longer distances), backyard-style cornhole is all about keeping it casual, social, but still a little competitive.

What You’ll Need:

- One Cornhole board (regulation size: 120cm x 60cm)

- Eight throwing bags (four of each colour for two teams)

- A flat surface (grass, turf, or sand works great)

How To Set Up:

- Place the board on a flat surface.

 - Players stand next to each other, behind a real or imaginary throwing line, about 4–6 metres from the board.

- Take turns throwing at the board from the same spot.

- All throws must be underhand  (no overarm cricket-style fastballs, thanks).

🏡 Backyard Tip:
Use a rope, chalk line, or even a garden hose to mark your throwing line if you want to keep things consistent.

Scoring Rules (Backyard Style)

The 101 basics:

3 points: Bag goes through the hole.

1 point: Bag lands and stays on the board.

0 points: Bag misses the board or hits the ground.

And here's where things can get spicy:

Knock your opponent’s bag off the board? They lose the point.

Accidentally knock their bag into the hole? They get the 3 points.

Your bag gets knocked off? Better luck next time...you lose the point.

After all 8 bags are thrown, tally the score. Only one team scores per round, the difference in points between the two teams is awarded to the higher-scoring team.
First to 21 points wins!

🏡 Backyard Tip:
Don't want any dodgy scoring? Use our Wooden Scoreboard that also doubles as a drinks holder - win win.

Backyard Tips for Beginners

Start closer: Adjust the distance to suit your group.

Play doubles or singles: Two or four players work best.

Practice your aim: Try to land bags flat for better control.

Keep it fun: Add music, snacks, and good vibes!
